April 18th, Part Three: Clinic in Fray Martin

Clinic day in Fray Martin...we saw over 220 people today. Highlights from today:
  • so beautiful! Fray Martin is gorgeous - large palm trees and mountains. Extremely picturesque.
  • Geyner and Pastor Jorge getting me a fresh coconut, right off the tree! and drinking fresh "agua de coco".
  • running water in the tourist hut!!! One of the men had put up some tarps for us around the baƱos and Susan had asked him to dig some holes there...for obvious reasons (poop). Well...the holes didn't get dug and the last time I went back there, there was a whole lotta human poop laying around. I was happy to get out. THEN we found out about these tourist huts! It was a bit of a jaunt to get to them but who cares!?! These huts have running water, including a toilet!!! I went to the bathroom as much as I possibly could this day! (: I even went when I didn't have to go...just in case I did!
  • the "lock" on the tourist hut: a string attached to a broom! You reach through the window, pull the broom and voila! the door opens! Brilliant!
  • there are TWO churches in Fray Martin...a catholic church and a protestant church.
  • the children....fascinated by my camera and quite frankly...by me! Likewise, I was quite fascinated by them.

Registration taking place in the church. This was our third location of the day for registration. Due to environmental issues (rain, wind, then hot sun) we moved several times today. The church was perfect, the only glitch was you had to go through this hole in the fence to get to the clinic part. The people were quite natural at it and I must say, by midway through the day, I had it down pretty good myself!
Looking pensive..wonder what I'm thinking? How do I spell that name? Is this woman pregnant? Is she breastfeeding? Does that child look like he has a fever? How am I going to get the pill in that child's mouth? What number is that in english again? Mentally draining for sure, but so, so worth it.
Julie in action: "Abra la boca"!

Geyner getting a coconut for me at lunch break
mmm, mmm, good. Notice the bulge in my right pocket...that's my phrase book!
Drugs in the pharmacy. Vitamins, analgesics, iron, antibiotics all divided up into certain quantities.

Pat hard at work in the Pharmacy with a watching boy hanging on the window.
