April 23: Tourist Day in Lima

Today was our one "tourist day". It felt really good to just relax and unwind a bit, after some intensive, remarkably humbling, weeks of work. Alex was a gracious tour guide and along with Susan, guided us through a world wind tour of Lima! Some highlights from our day in Lima:
  • traffic in Lima! Ha! Very few traffic lights...you just basically honk and go and hope you don't get hit! Crazy!
  • visiting the Franciscan Monastery, dating back to the 16th century and including the catacombs where 25,000 people were buried over the years. Quite something to see...especially the library. I SO wish I could have taken pictures inside this building!!..especially the library filled with ancient texts and books. Spectacular artistry and workmanship throughout this monastery.
  • the architecture of old-town Lima - huge, ornate balcones hanging out from the buildings. And the colours! - brilliant yellows and deep terra cottas. Beautiful!
  • the Pacific ocean..the pattern of the coastal landscape.
  • haivng to make a fast exit off the bus in downtown Lima. This was the only day I experienced severe instential cramping and the timing was horrific (as was the pain)! Thank heavens though, we were downtown and Susan spotted a Burger King of all places! I got off that bus so fast, I even left my bag behind. I bee lined for that place and looked behind and realized someone had been thinking and sent Alex with me. I hadn't thought clearly at all about the fact that I just jumped off a bus and had no money and no way of contacting anyone! The bus carried on to the Inca Market and Alex and I grabbed a taxi to join the group. In Lima, the taxi doesn't pull over to the side of the street, you just walk out into the middle of the street and grab one!
  • shopping in the silver market...my heavens silver is inexpensive here!
Martha and Janeen shop the sliver market!..rows and rows of little stores like this one.
Alex and Steve patiently wait for the women as they shop!

The Franciscan Monastery.
Shots of downtown Lima...all taken from the bus! We never stopped, so I apologize for the street lamps in the way often!...although some of them are quite beautiful!.....
A brilliant yellow building in the centre of Lima.
One of the spectacular balconies. Stunning.
Plaza de Armas, the main square with fountain in Lima. The parliament building is in the background.

The coastline by the Pacific Ocean in Lima.
Final moments with Susan, a remarkable woman who just gives and gives and gives of her time, energy and life to the people of Peru. A true privilege to come to know her.
