Above is Bismark Stone which is a large rock in formation along the shore of Lake Victoria. It just sits there balanced in this perfect way. Edah told us that the local people believe it has some sort of blessing and because of this they often swim out and try to climb up it.
Sunday afternoon involved a much needed break in terms of a chance to just tour around a bit and see more of the area that we were in. We spent the afternoon driving around Mwanza Town, seeing Lake Victoria up close. I wrote in my journal at night: "We experienced a profound contrast today when we went from the slums of Bugando to the district of the wealthy and then to the Talapia Hotel where the African Queen [from the movie] is. It was on these grounds that we saw many white people and saw luxury in Tanzania. Yet, only miles away peole are living in abject poverty. I couldn't help but think how we experience the same issues and contrasts in Canada - albeit on a smaller scale". Matari also took us to the wealthy district of Mwanza where those successful in business make their homes. For lunch we went to an actual Pizza Place!!! It was truly fantastic...like really fantastic! Honestly...probably the best pizza I've ever had in a restaurant. Just outside the restaurant is a wall that I found very moving. It highlights "Children's Rights" and was written in English and Swahili. I tried to capture some of the phrases on camera below:
