September 19th & 20th Toronto to London to Dar es Salaam to Mwanza, Tanzania

September 19, 2009 Journal Entry

En route to London. Currently in the air somewhere over the Atlantic and many of us wish we could just sleep!  It’s hard to believe that we are actually going to Africa...definitely has still not sunk in at all.  Those of us who have never been to London are pretty excited about our upcoming tour in the open air bus.  We have a 12 hour lay over in London, post an overnight flight from Toronto, so time to pass some hours and stay awake until the next flight!

Evening: On board the plane to Dar Es Salaam. Had a fun day on the open air bus tour in London. Some of us still have not slept.  It appears drugs may be in order...bring on the gravol!

Currently flying over the Indian Ocean [see picture above], before turning west towards Mwanza.  We arrived in Dar Es Salaam this morning and thankfully most of us got some sleep on that flight.  I think we are all looking forward to getting out of these clothes and having a shower and getting new underwear!  I don’t think we thought through the whole being in the same clothes for three days thing.
I'm happy to report that I got a SIM card for my unlocked cell phone that works in Tanzania!  Yay!...my safeguard for when I am traveling alone!

We are here...almost.  It feels quite surreal to think we are in Africa - so far and different from home.  It’s a bit of a heavy thought when I realize how much work is ahead of us over these next 2 weeks.  The journey feels so long already and we have not even really started.  There is so much yet to be done.

The airport at Dar was surrounded by lots of palm tress and as we flew over the Indian ocean it appeared crisp and blue with green hues.  We had our first official African breakfast at a restaurant in the airport and it was here that we saw our first member of the Masai tribe as well. [Pic to the left is the airport at Mwanza...just a tiny little building].
